What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical and professional communicator?  The most important thing I've learned throughout these processes is the importance of being thorough, detail-oriented, and organized. The only work I've done regarding research has been the classic research essay in other English classes, and it was a challenge to learn about each of the research methods, how to form a research design, and how to write a research proposal. I felt that each area required a certain amount of depth and detail that allowed it to be used effectively. Qualitative usability tests, for example, have to be thorough in order to yield the best results. This is a principle that can be applied to many other aspects of life. While writing the proposal, I had to stay organized because of the sheer number of sections and headings I was using. I was combining lots of content together, and it really tested my organizational skills, which is a skill I can u...

I'm excited to begin the revision process and start adding more content to this essay because it's been a very messy process thus far. When I write, I tend to overexplain things and make my sentences longer than they need to be, so I'm going to try and clean that up first and foremost. I need to expand on each of my sources a bit more as well, but the reason I didn't do that is because I fall into the trap of overexplaining there as well. Sometimes I just write, and write, and write, and it gets out of control because I just have to say exactly what I want to say in the exact way I want to say it. I'm very picky in that regard. What I have written is a very, very, very rough draft, and my work usually improves as I go through more and more rounds of editing. I think it's going to take a few attempts to make this as clean as possible, but we'll just have to see where this goes.

One thing I noticed in my research was a gap in theory. There wasn't a consistent explanation or theory within my topic of the effects of content and technical mistakes within journalism; no set theory or idea described why or how these issues formed, and most of my sources pointed to specific examples that were relevant to a small group. I wonder if this is due to the sheer number of complicating factors within the world of media and journalism, and it isn't accurate to nail down one specific issue and slap a name on it when there are so many complicating factors. This gap doesn't appear to be an issue, however, as drawing from each of these smaller, more niche examples and being aware of them is the first step to avoiding/combating them. I don't think filling this gap would benefit anyone for that same reason. Each media market has its own issues and problems, and filling that gap in one context might not fill it in another.

I think my favorite part about PTW is its wide scope and how there are a lot of different avenues you can take when studying it. Just in our first class, I was introduced to so many ideas and could see so many different angles and perspectives about the topic, which will help me generate ideas for my capstone and other posts. I mentioned this in class, but I write for Sun News here on campus, and I'm thinking of picking my topic somewhere in the field of journalism or media, because that is also very broad. I'm leaning toward focusing on how sentence structure, syntax, and word choice affect how information is effectively communicated. The way a sentence is phrased can affect how the audience interprets the information, and putting emphasis on certain parts of the sentence can convey how easy/difficult it is for people to understand it. The entire focus is to make sure the information is clearly communicated, which is especially important in the world of journalism.  Worksheet ...
